Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

At Cohen Veterans Network (CVN), we’re dedicated to improving the lives of veterans, service members, and their families.  Our evidence-based practices utilize proven treatments guided by the latest research.

What is CBT?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a structured, problem-focused therapy that is rooted in identifying and changing unhelpful patterns of thinking and behavior. This treatment is backed by extensive research and is recognized as one of the most effective approaches for addressing a wide range of mental health issues.

What Does CBT Help?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is used to treat many issues and conditions such as:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Chronic Pain
  • Panic Disorder
  • Substance Use Disorder
  • Eating Disorders
  • Obesity
  • Chronic Fatigue

CBT can be effective for acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) problems.

How Does CBT Work?

CBT focuses on identifying unhelpful patterns of thinking and behavior. Once you identify these patterns, you can learn to develop more helpful and flexible responses. Treatment can be on a one-on-one basis or in a group setting.

Counseling Sessions Focus On:

  • Recognizing unhelpful ways of thinking
  • Developing strategies to help manage emotions
  • Learning healthy coping mechanisms for stressful situations
  • Building skills to form healthy relationships and improve communication
  • Learning how to deal with grief and loss
  • Resolving issues stemming from service-related trauma

Goals of CBT

  • Identifying distorted ways of thinking
  • Modifying ways of thinking to be more accurate and helpful
  • Changing unhealthy and unhelpful behavioral patterns
  • Relating to others in a more balanced and healthy way

Duration of Treatment

Typically, CBT can be effective in fewer than 12 weekly sessions.
