Written Exposure Therapy (WET)

At Cohen Veterans Network (CVN), we’re dedicated to improving the lives of veterans, service members, and their families.  Our evidence-based practices utilize proven treatments guided by the latest research.

What is WET?

Written Exposure Therapy (WET) is a focused, evidence-based therapy designed to address Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) by enabling individuals to confront and process traumatic experiences through structured writing exercises. This brief treatment is an effective method to mitigate PTSD symptoms and promote healing.

What Does WET Help?

Written Exposure Therapy is beneficial for those dealing with PTSD. It provides a safe space to articulate trauma-related thoughts and emotions, offering relief from symptoms linked to various types of trauma including combat, sexual assault, and other distressing events.

How Does WET Work?

WET involves five structured sessions where clients engage in therapeutic writing about their trauma. This approach helps in processing the trauma narrative with less emotional distress, while also fostering new perspectives on the traumatic experience.

Counseling Sessions Focus On:

  • Understanding PTSD and its symptoms
  • Engaging in trauma writing exercises
  • Discussing the writing experience with a therapist
  • Developing new, healthier ways to perceive the traumatic event

Goals of WET

  • Processing traumatic memories to reduce emotional distress
  • Improving emotional resilience when recalling the trauma
  • Cultivating healthier ways to understand and integrate the trauma into your life narrative

Duration of Treatment

WET involves five sessions, each lasting about 50 minutes. Typically, sessions are held weekly, allowing a structured and consistent progress through the treatment.
