Creating a Cozy Holiday Atmosphere for Military Families

Deployments, PCSing, and temporary lodging facilities (TLF)s—it’s the norm for military families. Moving frequently is a part of military life for some, but the holiday season can amplify the stresses that come with being away from home. For military families, the holidays might mean celebrating in a place that lacks the warm familiarity of home. We’ve gathered some creative and practical ideas to help you make any temporary home feel cozy, festive and inviting, even if you’re amidst a PCS move this holiday season.

1. Pack a “Holiday Essentials” Box

Designate one moving box or storage container as your “holiday box.” Then, fill it with a few select decorations that are meaningful to your family, like a favorite ornament, string lights, festive pajamas, or a cozy blanket. Keep it accessible, so it’s available to move into your TLF or new home.

2. Set the Holiday Scene

Create a cozy, festive atmosphere with string lights, holiday carols, and some DIY decorations. Gather your family for some crafting time and make some simple decorations such as paper snowflakes, a homemade wreath, or handcrafted ornaments. Candles and essential oil diffusers can evoke a sense of festivity and comfort. Choose scents associated with the season, like cinnamon, pine, or vanilla, to bring holiday cheer to your temporary home.

3. Remember to Gather

Distance doesn’t have to mean disconnection. Schedule virtual hangouts with friends or family back home. Decorating cookies or watching holiday movies can help maintain your loved traditions, regardless of your location. If you’ve just moved to a new community, find an activity like a holiday stroll or Christmas tree lighting to be with those in your community.

4. Cook Familiar Dishes

Even if your temporary lodging doesn’t have a full kitchen, there are always ways to enjoy some holiday flavors. Find a local restaurant with similar items or make your favorite holiday treats or family-favorite recipes that remind you of home.

5. Explore Local Traditions

Get to know the local culture and celebrate their traditions. Whether it’s tasting local holiday dishes or participating in community events, adapting to your current location can add a unique twist to your festive season.

Being a military family means adapting and finding joy in unexpected places. While the holidays may not always unfold as you’d like, you can create a cozy, holiday atmosphere —no matter where you find yourself. Most importantly, remember that the essence of the holidays lies in togetherness.
